Shopping habits in the UK have changed over the last sixty years, and this can be seen in the changing appearance of any British high street – the main shopping street in a town or city. In the 1950s, high streets had rows of individual shops selling different things. (26)_____ Most people did this every few days in order to buy fresh food. The high street was a sociable place to be.

This started to change in the 1970s with the arrival of supermarkets. They gave people the chance to buy everything that they needed in one place. People didn’t need to go to individual shops any more. ( 27 )_____ So this new type of shop, along with a new way of storing meat and fruit at home, meant that instead of doing a small shop every few days, people could buy all the food that they needed for a week, or sometimes even a month.

As supermarkets became more popular, they changed from small local shops to huge superstores. ( 28 )____ They took people away from the high street. They also tried to offer customers everything that they needed, like a coffee shop, a hairdresser's and a chemist's. ( 29 )____ But this meant that the shops on the high street started to close down as they lost their customers.

These days, more and more people are choosing not to go to supermarkets to do their shopping. ( 30 )____ People are also trying to spend less money, so a new type of discount shop has become very popular. It may be because of this that people have stopped doing big weekly or monthly shops. Now they go to shops more frequently to buy what they need for the next few days. So, in many ways, people seem to be going back to the way people shopped in the 1950s.

A. The idea was to get customers to spend all their money in one place.

B. Customers knew exactly where to find the things they needed in each shop.

C. And because of their size, many of these supermarkets were outside town.

D. People loved it because they had never had the chance to do all their shopping there before.

E. At the same time, more and more people had freezers in their houses.

F. There was a greengrocer's next to a butcher's next to a baker's, and people visited each place to do their shopping.

G. Instead, they are using the internet to shop from home and get their shopping delivered.

Choosing a career may be one of the hardest jobs you ever have, and it must be done with care. View a career as an opportunity to do something you love, not simply as a way to earn a living.

Deciding what matters most to you is essential to making the right decision. You may want to begin by assessing your likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. Think about the classes, hobbies, and surroundings that you find most appealing. Ask yourself questions, such as “Would you like to travel? Do you want to work with children? Are you more suited to solitary or cooperative work?” There are no right or wrong answers ; only you know what is important to you. Determine which job features you require, which ones you would prefer, and which ones you cannot accept. Then rank them in order of importance to you.

The setting of the job is one factor to take into account. You may not want to sit at a desk all day. If not, there are diverse occupations – building inspector, supervisor, real estate agent – that involve a great deal of time away from the office. Geographical location may be a concern, and employment in some fields is concentrated in certain regions. Advertising job can generally be found only in large cities. On the other hand, many industries such as hospitality, law education, and retail sales are found in all regions of the country.

If a high salary is important to you, do not judge a career by its starting wages. Many jobs, such as insurance sales, offer relatively low starting salaries; however, pay substantially increases along with your experience, additional training, promotions and commission.

Don’t rule out any occupation without learning more about it. Some industries evoke positive or negative associations.

Most of the students have taken French language classes for 3 or 4 years and are finally getting an opportunity to use their French.

Not only are students learning a new language, but they are learning about a new culture, too. Students have been particularly surprised about the French attitude towards food.

"They won't leave anything on their plate," says Vanessa Athol. "They aren't wasteful at all." Vanessa has vowed to be more careful with waste when returning to the United States.

The group's chaperone , Mrs. Smith, has been pleased with the students' acquisition of language. "Even the most timid are trying their best to speak. The students are learning a lot. I’m very impressed," she said. Mrs. Smith added that she thinks living with a French family makes a difference because students are forced to speak French. "We are all very grateful to the French families who are hosting us."

The French families are happy to have the students, as they are getting to learn about American culture . Both groups will be celebrating the exchange at a large potluck dinner at the end of the stay. There will be a slide show of memories and the students will speak about their experiences.
